B is for Bufflehead - Flying Through the ABC's With Fun Feathered Friends, written and photographed by Steve Hutchcraft, is a must have children's book. The book was created to introduce the author/photographer's young daughter to the wonderful birds of North America in a non-intimidating way. Hutchcraft specifically chooses funny looking or silly sounding birds that will attract a child's attention. The book will interest children (and adults) on a variety of levels and ages. Pre-readers can appreciate the incredible photos as well as the letters and names of the birds all presented in a beautiful layout. Young children will enjoy the text designed to intrigue them with fun and interesting facts about each bird. A more detailed fun fact section is included at the end of the book for more advanced readers. In additon there is a "Who's Who" bird section and a "Who's Who" baby bird section for those who want to be challenged. Be sure to put this book on your holiday shopping list!
Birds of New Jersey Field Guide by Stan Tekiela is an essential guide for all New Jersey birders whether young, old, experienced or inexperienced. As a former kindergarten teacher, WBU staffer, Barb Trueheart can actually attest that this guide is simple enough for a kindergartener to use! The guide is divided into color coded sections. The user simply and easily flips to the appropriate color coded section which is arranged by bird size (smallest to largest in each section) and voila - the bird search is done! Each New Jersey bird gets a two page description: a full color photograph appears on the left hand page (with an insert picture of the female if coloration varies) followed by a description page on the right. Description includes such information as common and scientific name, a NJ migration map and information, color, size, male/female/juvenile info, and nesting and feeding habits, There is also a section at the bottom of the page entitled "Stan's Notes" in which the author shares special or unique facts about each NJ bird. This is definitely the guide for you if you have ever fumbled through a bird guide trying to locate a bird only to have that bird fly away before you have been able to properly identify it!
For the Birds: A Month-by-Month Guide to Attracting Birds to Your Backyard by A. Schmauss, M. Schmauss, and G. Krolick is an excellent basic guide to birdfeeding that appeals to both novice backyard birdfeeders and experienced ones. The first chapter addresses the four basic elements in creating a backyard wildlife habitat. The succeeding chapters are broken down by months and include information about what birds to look for as well as tips on feeding and specific feeders, water, nesting, and so forth. A nice touch appears at the end of each monthly chapter. A journal notes section enable the owner of the book to jot down birds that were seen and any other specific information unique to his/her yard. A troubleshooting section at the end of the book provides answers to help resolve the most common problems faced by backyard birders. Comments from some of our customers bears testament that the book appeals to birders of all levels. The novice birders say they rely on it at the beginning of each month to help them know what to expect. Our more experienced birders comment that the tips have helped them attract some specialist birds like the Baltimore Oriole.
